WHO:

Great Blue Herons and their chicks nesting at Beacon Hill Park.

WHAT:

As much as possible from late April to late June, I try to get down to Beacon Hill Park with a good telescope to check out the growing chicks plus give friends and walking-by public a very closeup view of those majestic birds and their growing chicks.
Don't miss one of these opportunities to have a nice stroll in the park and check it out.  It might seem like something not worth the effort, but it truly is.  I lost count a long time ago of the number of times new observers say "OH WOW!" on their first look into the scope.

WHERE:

In Beacon Hill Park around Goodacre Lake.  You'll most often find me across the driveway from the pickle ball courts.  But I'll sometimes (in the afternoons) be by the benches near the Cameron Bandshell.

WHEN:

Here are the date and times I'll be at the park in 2026, with Sundays from 1000-1200 being the most consistent.

  • Sunday, April 26:  1000-1200
  • Friday, May 1:  1330-1600
  • Sunday, May 3:  1000-1200
  • Friday, May 8:  1230-1500
  • Sunday, May 10:  1000-1200
  • Saturday, May 16:  1500-1700
  • Sunday, May 17:  1000-1200
  • Wednesday, May 20:  1000-1200
  • Saturday, May 23: 1300-1500
  • Sunday, May 24:  no viewing this Sunday
  • Sunday, May 31:  1000-1200
  • Sunday, June 7:  1000-1200
  • other dates TBD

The schedule is subject to changes/additions/deletions, and rain will likely cancel a viewing.
Be sure to check back here before heading out.

WHY:

Because it's fun!  Not to mention that it's a good chance to check out nature, meet new friends, and share with others.
